Out of the Blue

It's been suggested that this hole in my basement is a sump, and that a sump-pump may help us with out wetness issue. By my vagueness, it should be more obvious than ever that this is way out of my area of expertise, but it seems like a remedy that's easy and inexpensive enough to implement that it's worth giving a try.

Oh hell, here's a photo: OMG! Jimmy Hoffa's down there! Get on the horn to Geraldo... Seriously -- I do a lot of my own home repairs and improvements, but I'd have an experienced plumber take a look at that thing. Bizarre.
