THQ Director Blames Piracy for Iron Lore Closure

GamesIndustry.biz reports on a post on the Quarter To Three Forums by THQ director of creative management Michael Fitch venting his frustrations with the state of PC gaming following the closure of Iron Lore Entertainment (story). The lengthy post outlines concerns about rampant piracy, how Titan Quest's reputation suffered when pirates reported crashes (which were caused by failure to properly crack the game's DRM), complaints about hardware vendors creating compatibility issues, stupid users and bad reviewers. He concludes trying to look at the bright side: "Alright, I'm done. Making PC products is not all fun and games. It's an uphill slog, definitely. I'm a lifelong PC gamer, and hope to continue to work on PC games in the future, but man, they sure don't make it easy."

there are just as many pirated console games on the net as there are pirated pc games. you just have to know where to look.
Actually you pretty much look in the same places you find the PC games.

cliffski, you're right that pirating on a console takes a few steps and that's exactly why some folks dont bother pirating and simply buy the game they want.

Actually they probably rent it. Of course game devs bitch about that too. Buying it just gets you screwed over since you're stuck with what you bought for the most part, even if it's a buggy mess. You can trade it in for pennies on the dollar, but that's just another scam. That doesn't stop some game devs from claiming that game trading is killing the games industry though. I wonder if there's anything that those guys don't bitch about.

I've had a 360 for a while now, but I hardly play it because there's hardly anything worth playing on it. Every now and then something fun comes along (Rock Band most recently), but then it's just a lot of crap until the next time there's something worth playing. Since PC gaming will never completely die, I'd probably just make do with whatever indie games I could get, and forget consoles altogether since they offer so much less in terms of gameplay than even indie PC games offer in most cases. Yeah, they're pretty and flashy and all, but they lack depth, innovation and often a decent control scheme.
