The PS3 does an awesome job of upscaling standard DVD's. It's still nowhere near comparable to an actual Blu-Ray (or HD DVD) movie. If you take a PS3 and hook it up to a 32" tv and watch it from 8 feet away it's going to look like a huge waste of money compared to a dvd player with a dvd.
The content looks better, but it's like putting racing tires on a Prius, until you buy the new TV to use those HD Movies you're just wasting your money.
I think we've got a few years to go before Hd movies really have a large audience (when people have 1080p Tv's with 46+ screens) and in that time companies will offer HD solutions via digital downloads that don't require $400 players to watch. The HD formats seem to fill a void for the next 2 or 3 years when early adopters (for big TV's) don't have easy access to HD movie downloads but have the nice TV's and disposable income.
