10 Million WoW Clients Need Patching

A new patch is now available for World of Warcraft, coincidental with this Blizzard Press Release announcing that World of Warcraft now has 10 million active subscribers worldwide. As there are always quibbles about what that means, here's their definition: "World of Warcraft subscribers include individuals who have paid a subscription fee or have an active prepaid card to play World of Warcraft, as well as those who have purchased the game and are within their free month of access. Internet Game Room players who have accessed the game over the last thirty days are also counted as subscribers. The above definition excludes all players under free promotional subscriptions, expired or cancelled subscriptions, and expired prepaid cards. Subscribers in licensees' territories are defined along the same rules." As for the patch, a new version 2.3.3 update is now available, though the Current Patch WoW Notes list the current version as 2.3.2 and the 2.3.3 patch notes are on the test realm page, so this new version may not actually be live yet. Downloads of the US/Aus manual version 2.3.3 client patch are available from ActionTrip, AtomicGamer, FanGaming, FileFront, Gamer's Hell, Games32, The Patches Scrolls, and Strategy Informer. Various other language editions of the patch are on ActionTrip, AtomicGamer, Gamer's Hell, Games32, and The Patches Scrolls. I hope it goes without saying that you should probably not patch your client until you are sure your server is running the new version.

...doubling if not tripling their staff...

My ass, they have one old dude that comes in Monday night and resets all the servers. Everyone else is busy craping out the next expansion, every TWO years. My guess is that most of the programmers are too busy taking money baths to worry about getting their code up to 24/7 standard. Sooner or later the next big thing will come along, just hope it's in my lifetime.
