BF2142 Demo Issue

The Battlefield Website (thanks Planet Battlefield and Ant) has word that EA/DICE is aware of disconnect issues with the newly released Battlefield 2142 demo, and is searching for solutions. They also mention that the demo was such a svelte 1106 MB download due to the exclusion of 33 MB worth of DirectX installers, so a DX installation is necessary for anyone who doesn't have it yet. Here's word on the disconnects:

We are aware that some players are experiencing disconnects while playing the Demo. Please know we are running checks and making enhancements to our support systems so that these disconnects can be solved as quickly as possible.

Just to add another bitching voice: Also remember that the game has already been h4Xx0red. Punkbuster is a joke.

Without PunkBuster, everyone would be fucked.

They'd have to depend on game developers to put in anti-cheat, and cheating STILL isn't a big enough of an issue for gamers to clue up about and only buy games that support it.

EA put PunkBuster in for exactly one reason - it's the easiest way they can look like they're doing something about cheating. After you've bought the game, they've got your money.

Gamers need to pay attention to this stuff and use it to decide what games they're going to buy and what games they're not going to buy. Then they'll start taking it seriously. Until then - we're boned.

The inclusion of PunkBuster is a GREAT start, because it gives gamers a known brand they can look for on the box.

Your comment about PunkBuster being a joke I think is completely untrue. We run a large number of servers here in Australia and it is routinely catches cheats and violators. In comparison, I've been logging all VAC cheats caught in CSS for a couple of weeks, and in all that time it has dropped _one_ user.

PunkBuster only needs to work once to stop a cheat's CD key from being useful.
