An
informed looking forum post yesterday convinced us it was worth a try
brining the chickens before grilling them, so they've been soaking overnight,
and we'll give them a shot today.

Make sure that not only are you selecting the “do not seek floppy drive at startup” option but that it’s port is not set to auto ( a set to off, these are typically in completely different menus in the bios, the one I am referring too is typically with the harddrive config area), and also make sure somehow your boot sequence did not get reordered and floppy is first, etc etc.
Sounds more the MB got reset. With it being 3 years old it is possible the battery on the MB went dead and in a power loss or when you turned it off everything got reset to defaults.
But MB’s do unfortunately go bad. If all else fails put a damn floppy in it to get you buy (cheaply) for a while until you are ready for the upgrade!
