Valve announces that the Game of the Year edition of Half-Life 2 is now in stores in North America:

True but all this "GOTY" and "greatest game ever" is not to be taken seriously. This is just for the uninformed, commercial fast-food gamers out there and not some statement to the knowing ones, the real gamers.

It's just like saying that Titanic is the best movie ever eventhough everyone knows that movies like "Citizen Kane", "The godfather", "Shawshank Redemption" or "Once Upon a Time in America" are unreachable leagues ahead of Titanic.

This "greatest game ever" is just a marketing trick to cash in even more money and hide behind a just slighty above-average and buggy FPS with no real innovation or remarkable feature: HL2.

I believe that all the magazine or online reviewers who gave HL2 a GOTY award should just be ignored in the future because they are quite obviously only following the flow and don't have the courage to express their own opinion.
