Carmack doesn't think physics or AI are going to go anywhere soon. Fear not, for without a doubt Carmack is THE unrivaled God of Graphics Programming, but...
when it comes to AI, Physics, and especially Gameplay, his opinions are no more valid than the average gamer.
For example, he could probably write a fabulous audio engine but he's not a Musician who could -compose- all the soundtracks in a game and expertly comment on The State of Music in Games.
in the same way, he's not really expertly qualified to comment on Gameplay, Physics, or AI. He could probably design the gameplay for a fps (cuz there isn't any! ) but i doubt he could design a state of the art RPG or MMOG.
He's a game Technologist, not a game Designer.
edit: as for faking AI and physics - back in the Olden Days programmers used to fake 2D animation the same way, pre-rendered and scripted. Eventually someone will come along and do for AI and Physics and Gameplay what Carmack did for Graphics. This comment was edited on Aug 15, 22:08. |
