Out of the Blue

It seems I am not out of the woods yet with this game machine. I know I already declared my problems more-or-less solved, but I'm guessing that there were a couple of times along the way that Sisyphus probably thought he had that rock completely up the hill too.

As at least one reader pointed out, the nForce 3-based motherboard was a terrible choice to mate with a 6800 series card, because in the world of hardware where insanity is the order of the day, there is a specific conflict between these NVIDIA cards and these NVIDIA motherboards. Seems the choice I'm faced with in trying to get these two products to work together is by either using NVIDIA's GART driver, which conflicts with the UART driver in WinXP SP2, or by not installing the NVIDIA GART driver and suffering a huge performance hit. I even went through another complete Windows reinstall yesterday because the Tech Support dude thought it was a way to get proper performance from the WinXP UART. As is often said about bad movies, that's a couple of hours of my life I won't get back, but it did nothing to improve the situation.

Anyway, looks like I've got at least one more hardware reinstall along the way here. If I'm lucky it will be the conclusion of this episode. Of course I bet there were a couple of times along the way that Sisyphus probably thought he had only one more trip up the hill too.

25. 6800 nforce3 stuttering Jul 25, 2005, 14:18 AutoSear

Blue,
You can greatly reduce the stuttering by disabling AGP Fastwrites in your mobo BIOS. Removing the nVidia GART driver, as you've discovered, is not a solution. Here's a thread with tons of information regarding the issue:
