DAoC: Catacombs "Open" Beta Plans

MM Hell has an advance bit from a Q&A with Mythic's Matt Firor that will be published next week. The excerpt states that they are gearing up to launch the open beta for Dark Age of Camelot in the next few days. They also point out that in this case "open" testing of the MMORPG expansion will require being a subscriber to the original game, and possibly also already having the previous expansions installed.

With the amount of sucess Mythic has had with DAOC over the years, I don't think panicing is what they are. It's extremely hard to keep a subscribtion base to a game for so long, I don't think they have unrealistic ideas of how many folks they can keep with their franchise.

The fact that folks get so wired up about "open" betas show that they are in fact very interested.

I suspect those who are still with DAOC are going to be disapointed with WoW for it's simplicity, and since they haven't gone over to the EQ side yet, and with reviews not being so high over EQ2, I don't see them leaving for that too. That said...I don't see some average joe picking up DAOC now when these two hit the stores, too much press.

I see WoW getting a huge initial subscribtion base that falls off quite quickly, after the hype passes. The Blizzard universe is cool and all, and the game is fun and all...but not for extended periods of time like I remember DAOC to be.
