On Half-Life 2 Delays

Half Life 2 may not make 2004 VGpro.com (thanks Voodoo Extreme and Planet Half-Life and Frans) has a quote from Valve's Gabe Newell taken from Polygon magazine reflecting their willingness to delay the release of Half-Life 2 as long as required to create the gameplay experience they are envisioning. He goes so far as to express a willingness to delay the game's release another year and spend another barrelful of money on the game:

"We've already spent millions into this project, and we're willing to spend as much as we need to make this the best first person experience ever. If that means delaying the game to 2005, we'll do it without any hesitation. If it means sinking another $20 million into the project, we can do it. Rest assured, if we delay the game, it'll be only to blow your socks off even more when it finally releases."

Update: Though many have tried to interpret this as a further delay announcement, it has been pointed out that this quote was made in reference to the game's delay in September 2003.

Well, what I want to see is that what HL2 claims to deliver: enemies with a much wider range of behaviors than just a few basic attack/hide routines, and "scripted sequences" that are actually made up of a bunch of small elements that can react to your input. We'll see if they actually pull it off or if it's just bullplop.

I actually didn't like how the Far Cry grunts would never really stand down. You'd think on a HUGE island, they'd figure the enemy might have gone off somewhere else, and get back to defend their posts. Or if they realized a sniper was hitting them, they'd try to get out of the open and stop inspecting everything under the sun. But they stay alert nonstop, shouting their "where are yous!!!" over and over and running this way and that, which after awhile really breaks the illusion. I find sneaking up to people silly hard: when they spot you it often doesn't feel like you deserved it, it just seems sort of random. GTA's standdown system was pretty good in that there at least some ways to get the threat level back down.
