Out of the Blue

I have been a big fan of Tic Tac mints since they first came out when I was a kid (I guess I just dated myself again). They've become even more of a mainstay in my life since I became a driver, as I had a bunch of packages in the car at one point and provoked an expectation from my passengers that they would always find Tic Tacs there, perpetually forcing me to keep them properly stocked. I was only a little nonplussed by the "More Enjoyable Freshness" slogan on the last package of these I picked up, figuring there was a bonus container of mints in the package. To my shock, it turns out this refers to the fact that they've increased the size of each mint by 30%. I kept an open mind about this before trying them, but my worst fears are confirmed, as they have managed to ruin the ratio of outer coating to inner mint... actually I imagine the proportions are the same, but the effect is different, and I don't like the new variety nearly as much as the old one. I hope there's a plan to keep the older type around as well. If there isn't, I guess I'll have to count on disgruntled fans like myself forcing them to go back... sort of like how we got New Coke killed back in the day (gosh, that's already a long time ago too... I really have to stop doing that).

Ooops! Almost forgot -- Happy Birthday Frans!!!!!!!!

And why'd you walk out of the Two Towers?

I'm a purist. The 'cinematic license' that was taken increased with each movie, and I couldn't shake the feeling that the emphasis was put on battle scenes instead of the story. Then there's the whole book-to-movie conversion, which is a recipe for disaster in the first place--and something I don't even want to start in on for fear of my fingers staging a rebellion.

I suppose my biggest problem with the movies was the destruction of the universe, so to speak. The actual (fictional) history behind the places and people was largely left out, or only touched upon lightly. The universe that Tolkien created is arguably his greatest achievement with the books, it is one of the things that I have most enjoyed.

I did eventually see The Two Towers in full, and I've seen that and The Fellowship of the Ring several times (most of my friends do not share my views on this subject). There is undoubtedly more I could say, and much I should make clearer but in all honesty I'm too tired. I've gotta be up in five hours and I still want to sqeeeze in a bit of KotOR before bed (not a good idea if I value sleep, I know).

Edit: D'oh! Creston's post got me so wound up (not intentionally, I know) that I didn't even see RKone's post. Just what he's described about The Return of the King makes my blood boil. The entire story of the Stewards of Gondor seems to have been almost entirely ignored, and it is a significant part of the story! Aw shit, my left middle finger is starting to rebel (trust me, I can tell ;)) I'm done now, I swear.
