On C-Z and DNF Release Dates

GameStop is now the second e-tailer to push the release date of Counter-Strike: Condition Zero back to March 2004. Valve has not given any indications that the game is delayed to that point, but their expected November 18 release date (story) for the supposedly gold shooter has come and gone without comment, reminiscent of the tight-lipped handling of the Half-Life 2 delay (thanks HomeLAN Fed). Also on HomeLAN Fed is a report based on this morning's conference call with Take Two Interactive saying the publisher is passing along indications they have received from 3D Realms that Duke Nukem Forever is heading for a release in "late 2004 or early 2005." Of course the game's release is entirely in the hands of 3D Realms, and it's doubtful that their official release date for the game has changed from their hard-line mantra of "when it's done."

36. King of Wired's Vaporware list Dec 18, 2003, 13:51 ZigZang

Looks like DNF will make the top of Wired's vaporware list yet again this year. Or, more likely, they will get tired of even discussing it. It does make me wonder though, just WHAT could be taking so fricking long to finish this game? There have been several generations of revolutionary games released since this game was announced in '96. What will it take for DNF to justify this obscene amount of development? Here's my $0.02:

* Complete realistic physics and interaction with all objects (this is everything, down to the last ejected bullet casing).
* No "levels", just one massive interactive world (seamless level loading will work if and only if you can travel to any place anytime you wish).
* 100+ hours of gameplay. 15 hours of gameplay will not cut it.
* Near photo quality textures, etc. (Doom 3 caliber graphics or better)
* Revolutionary gameplay. There simply HAS to be more to this game than blowing shit up with some new weapon. Likewise, DNF must be much more than a straight forward FPS. I want to use the environment to kill (ie push walls or book cases over - see interactive environment above).
* Deformable terrain and buildings. Not like Red Faction, complete and utter capability to destroy the ground and buildings and to have the environment react accordingly.
* Not a great story, but a LANDMARK story. I want to laugh, I want to cry.
* Duke humor for ADULTS. This had better not be some kiddie game.
* Kick ass multiplayer. No deathmatch only. How about coop?
* and what else, oh yeah, how about no freaking BUGS!? If you can't get it right in 9 years, you are never going to get it right.
