Halo Trial Version

As promised, the playable demo of the PC version of Halo: Combat Evolved is now available from Microsoft Game Studios and IGN. The trial version of Gearbox's port of Bungie's shooter is a 131 MB download. Here's the deal: "In the trial version, gamers can experience both single and multiplayer gameplay, including limited vehicle combat. In the single player campaign level 'The Silent Cartographer', gamers assume the role of super-soldier Master Chief as he takes on the fierce alien faction known as the Covenant. In the multiplayer map 'Blood Gulch', up to 16 human opponents can light each other up with devastating weaponry and combat vehicles, including the new Rocket Warthog and the Banshee, either online or via LAN connection." Additional mirrors can now be found on 3D Downloads, 3D Gamers, Boomtown (registration required), Computer Games Online, FileFront,, (registration required), Gamer's Hell, GameSpot (registration required), GameTab,, and Worthplaying.

multiplayer on this demo is...well...I was utterly dismayed. However, after a couple of days, i found a good server...then, some vague pattern started to emerge, where a 10 player server would be fine until #9 or #10 joined, and then it would hit the skids. There are a few fine-speed CTF servers out there [accessible from the uk atleast], but a lot more wouldn't hurt. When the lag's not there, it plays great, and its alot of fun. Would be nice if there was some readily-visible ping-display too..but...i can't find it.

Anyway, all you big gfx boys, stop being so proud, drop the res and turn off spec, plays fine at 800x600, and put it down to the curious history this title has had, and the wonders of corporate pressure to release a game.
