The Athlon Optimized Programs Page features downloads of DLLs said to improve the performance of Quake III Arena, among other apps, on AMD hardware. They have posted new Athlon XP DLLs, saying: "Note to people who think these DLLs are "unfair" in benchmarks. This is horribly incorrect. Quake3 (even with an Athlon XP) forces AMD chips to use 3DNow, not SSE. Little do people know the 3DNow! code is completely broken in Quake3. It does not help at ALL. The Pentium 3 and 4 chips however are both detected as "Pentium 3" chips, which automatically uses SSE which DOES work in Quake3 and gives a significant FPS boost. These DLLs don't enable SSE but do help with Athlons.. and if SSE was to ever be enabled in Quake3 for Athlon processors they would blow Pentium 4 chips out of the water even more. In the tests I ran a P4-2.53 @ 3.32GHz, 175/700fsb lost to a "stock" Athlon XP 2700+(2166MHz, 166fsb) using these dlls..." Thanks rms.

You're standing on a slippery slope Marksman.

Think about it: If "System requirements" state the game uses directx9 functionality, then wouldn't that mean that only directx9 class video cards would run the game? (after all, it is "required")

Remember Directx9 adds a lot more than access to features on the newest video cards. It is an API, and will have new functions that directx8 does not have, even for directx8 class hardware. So even though the game requires directx9 compatible drivers, the game supports directx8 cards, because it doesn't use any features that only the dx9-level cards support. As for the game developer recommending a dx9-level card, it's because they're also the fastest cards. Proof the game uses PS2.0 and VS2.0 would be a quote saying as much.
I've played (at least) halfway through the game myself (on a 9700Pro), and I haven't seen any PS2.0 or VS2.0 effects.

As for the NV30 vs the NV35 - remember the NV30 had memory clocked at 1Ghz, the NV35 is what, 600Mhz? So while the total bandwidth is up (because of the 128-bit memory interface), it's not double. Still, the performance on the 5900U is undeniably faster than the 9800Pro in directx8 or older programs. It is too early to say much about performance in games that use the new features of directx9, but there's enough info to say it doesn't look good for current nvidia cards...

Back on topic, the guy doesn't tell us enough about the P4 system he tested. Everyone seems to have forgotten that dlls in general are 20% faster the qvms, so if he was using the default qvms on the Intel system, there goes most of his AMD 'enhancements'...
