There's a brief PlanetSide Developer's update on the official website discussing the various improvements to the MMOFPS as it nears its May 19 release date (thanks Frans). Action Vault's Homeworld 2 Diary #5 is online, in which Relic Entertainment's Geoff Thomas, assistant producer on the upcoming space strategy sequel, discusses the art and science of sound design. Along the way he describes the occasionally undervalued nature of this aspect of gameplay: "Sound is often the most overlooked aspect of game production. Which is odd because it's invariably a game's sound design that really gives life to characters, events and the world in which they unfold. Visuals can easily capture someone's attention, but it's sound that delivers resonance and emotional context. The primary goal of any successful sound design is to more deeply articulate the dynamic, responsive nature of the game universe through intuitive and intelligent feedback. When it works, the results are always more than the sum of their parts, but it's a very delicate relationship that requires a lot of tuning and a gentle hand."
