DOOM III Q&A

There's a DOOM III Q&A on GameSpot where they catch up with id Software's Tim Willits, lead designer on the upcoming remake of their seminal first-person shooter. They include a quite groovy new screenshot, and discuss the game's single-player play, as well as what sort of multiplayer support is planned. One of Tim's answers offers hope for the return to preeminence of one of the mainstays of the DOOM/DOOM II arsenal:

All the weapons in Doom III are fun to use, and each one serves a purpose in the game, depending on the situation the player is in, but I think my overall personal favorite is still the shotgun. It has a wide range of uses--good for picking bad guys off from a distance, and great for those in-your-face battles. When I have it up, I can almost feel it in my hands, the heavy metal feel and the feedback I get when I fire it right on. When I run out of shotgun ammo, I really begin to get scared.

Garbage. It means a world of diference. If you're invincible then there's no fear driving your actions, no caution as you approach new situations/environments. Godmode is the #1 way to ruin a gaming experience.

Don't criticise HL because you were too lazy (or just incompetant?) to give it a fair go.

FWIW, I first played HL only a few months ago - I was a Mac-boy when it first came out so I missed the initial experience. I have to say that even after having played such FPS games as JK2, DX, NOLF2, BF:1942, MoH:AA and countless other titles I can't remember, HL still has one of the most exciting and memorable solo games I have had the pleasure of beating.

"I'm wondering what story there is to Half-Life except for what had been ripped directly from Doom: a portal has been opened and monsters have flooded the surroundings. Time for you to survive!"

Bah, I thought you said you played it! The horror-survival thing is just the beginning to the story in HL, it develops greatly form there.

"Bullshit. Valve knows what to sell, not what's best for gamers at this point."

Even if you're right about Valve (which I don't think you are), what make you think id knows any better???
