UT2003 Q&A

There's a Jay Wilbur Q&A on Computer and Video Games talking with the Epic Games' biz-guy about Unreal Tournament 2003. The discussion covers things like where the Unreal series stands in gamers' hearts, the future of the franchise, his satisfaction with the feature-set being offered in UT2003, the success of the series, their FPS influences, why they call UT2003 the next generation of multiplayer first-person shooters, his favorite weapon from the game, their impressive AI, the reasons for foregoing multiplayer play in Unreal II, and more.

Wait, Unreal was "next gen sp"? I remember a game with basically no story and very little replay value. There was a neat scripted sequence in the beginning, where you see the door raise a bit and hear people screaming, but then they abandoned any pretense of storytelling and had you walking through pretty landscapes for a couple of hours.

Deus Ex would be closer to my idea of the next generation of single-player games, at least in the FPS realm, but we won't get there until our computers can hold much, much bigger worlds in them, and AI becomes adaptable enough to respond to unanticipated player actions with appropriate responses. In other words, we need our computers to think; there's only so much that you can do with scripted sequences. Granted, that "only so much" is actually quite a bit, but real AI will open the door to gameplay that's unimaginable at this point.

Like it or not, we're still in the dark ages of gaming...
