It was five years ago yesterday that John Carmack announced that it would be at a tournament at E3 that his Ferrari 328 would be given away, a prize that was eventually won by Thresh. Sadly, it was also one year ago yesterday that the fateful crash that took Dale Earnhardt's life occurred (and his son only had three accidents in yesterday's race).

Back to more pleasant commemorations, there are some birthdays today: Happy Birthday to Dave "Zoid" Kirsch (formerly of id), Don "onethumb" MacAskill (formerly of Ritual), Andrew "Pook" Collins (also formerly of Ritual), and, to repeat my annual joke (which I will do until someone actually finds it amusing) old-school 3D guru Nicolaus Copernicus.

That actually restores some hope for me in the American people. I had almost lost it after 8 years of Slick Willie. The thought of "President Gore" still gives me the shivers.
