Mike Capps Leaves Epic Entirely

In a post on Facebook Michael Capps announces he is completely parting ways with Epic Games, after indicating he would be serving the company in an advisory role when he announced late last year he was stepping down from his post of president of the studio (thanks VideoGamer). "When we announced that I wanted to transition out of my leadership role at Epic, the plan was for a continued but less active role, service on the board of directors, and ideally, being that eccentric semi-retired guy who still comes to playtests and gold parties," writes Capps. "Iím sad to say that plans have changed, and as of February 11th, Iím no longer affiliated with Epic Games." Besides burping his impending baby, Capps says he is "considering seats on a few company and advisory boards" (which sounds similar enough to his most recent role at Epic that it suggests questions about the departure), is "proud to serve as an advocate for our art in Washington," and is also contemplating pursuing teaching options.

Im guessing that making Gears of War part 37. isnt exactly demanding work for lead developers??

Except that People Can Fly is now doing Gears.

Epic is doing Fortnite, which we've seen nothing of in forever, and using that to bide time until their big next-gen title, which all signs point to not being a Gears game.

So...erm...their big next-gen title will NOT be Gears of War? You sure about that? So its going to be er...what.....Unreal part 7?? Actually if done well that would be quite cool but somehow I doubt they could ever go back to what made Unreal great...

Well, the Gears trilogy ended. The story was wrapped up. Neatly. In a bow. There was nowhere to go but backwards, and People Can Fly is handling the prequel.

Plus, Epic tends to telegraph what they're working on with their engine demos. Looking back over the history of the Unreal Engine I can't find a single demo that used significant assets that didn't lead to a game. We've had 2 recent Unreal demos. 1 was a futuristic city, and 1 was a fantasy game. My guess is that the futuristic city represents a game that was in development and possibly put on hold and that the fantasy world is where they're going. Either that, or the futuristic city is still in development and the fantasy art truly is something created just for the demo reel, since it's a brand new engine and this was a good way to show their particle effects.

We'll probably find out at E3, but I'd put $20 that says that Epic NC will not be doing another Gears game anytime soon.

Next game: FortNite (which is really a small game with small expectations that lets their devs do something completely new and flex some creative muscle, lets their engineers learn how to use UE4 really damn well, and bides time before the next-gen consoles hit)
Next game after (revealed sometime this year): future city or fantasy
