Do you know if releasing the rats behind a closed door in doctor blahblah's lab at the beginning count as a kill? I mean, they're not my rats, they just happened to get loose. For that matter how are sidequest kills/stats handled in the end chapter/zone total up?

No idea on the first one, I wasn't paying much attention. Special tasks are divvied up in their own section in the lower left but as far as I could tell all kills and stuff count towards mission end totals. One of the later missions had an optional quest where you could pick a side between two people and resulted in a death but I don't think it counted towards to the total. Generally speaking though, most deaths will count, accidental or otherwise. As an example, a guard tried to shoot me and accidentally hit one of my mission targets and I was blamed for the kill.

The game is incredibly fun if you don't save scumm it. The game auto-saves on area transitions which are infrequent but usually enough that they essentially act as checkpoint saves.

There's currently a bug where if you side with a specific person during a later quest, you'll get a "kill" even if there's no killing involved. Arx is aware of the issue and it's apparently going to be fixed in the next patch.

As for save scumming, it all depends on how you play. If you're going for a true ghost playthrough (no killing/incapacitating anyone) and you're trying to get all the loot and you're playing on the highest difficulty, it's pretty much impossible to get through the game without save scumming. If your self-imposed rules are more flexible and you're okay with getting into fights, then relying on the autosaves alone is fine.
