It was the first FF game for a large generation of gamers so I get the FF7 hype. The game itself was an interesting culmination of several different subsystems Square used in previous games. It doesn't always work but it was really interesting and easy to get immersed in. Tons of side content ranging from the silly to recruitable characters.
I agree though that there are better games in the series

A game that came out when most people didn't even have dialup internet now requires a persistent internet connection to play.
