THQ Results: InSane Cancelled

THQ's Fiscal 2013 First Quarter Results are online, revealing losses for the period, albeit not as large as projected. Still the new is not good, and is followed by the worse news from a post-earnings conference call that the company has cancelled preproduction of InSane, a high profile collaboration with Guillermo del Toro, saying the rights to the property are being returned to the Hollywood director. "We have decided not to pursue further pre-production on Insane, and have returned all of our IP rights to Guillermo del Toro," said THQ president Jason Rubin. "By canceling these explorations outside of our core business, we feel we can improve focus on our core game portfolio, which remains unchanged." This prompted George Broussard to tweet: "THQ is done. Will just be a year or so going through the paces. Will see how Darkstalker 2 team fares post ship."

If even George Broussard can see the light at the end of the tunnel for you, you know shit is bad.

Also, what exactly is THQ's core business? Do they even have anything anymore besides Saints Row?

Creston

WH40k, Company of Heroes, Metro, Darksiders.

Add to that Red Faction and WWE (must be making money, they've done like a thousand different iterations), plus they've got the South Park RPG coming up. That should do VERY well, considering the built-in fan base of millions and the hype around it being the first bona fide video game based on the series, i.e. actually being written and produced by Stone and Parker.

I wouldn't include Red Faction. After the flop that was Armageddon, THQ said that they were basically killing the franchise. As for WWE, those games tend to sell decently but WWE takes a hefty cut of the profits. I am curious to see how well the South Park game does, especially with the $60 price tag. The series isn't exactly at the peak of its popularity and given the game's relatively low production values, $60 might seem too steep for most consumers.
