GameFront - Why I'm Not Okay with the Penny Arcade Kickstarter.
But Penny Arcade doesn't need money from Kickstarter, or to crowdsource new projects. It simply would prefer to remove ads from its site for one year, at the cost of a huge amount of money. But it’s choosing to gather that money not through usual business channels, but through Kickstarter — and in a way, it’s taking advantage of the Kickstarter culture and drawing away users who would potentially give funds to more needy projects.

A business that is mature enough to host two yearly major conventions, with all the online commerce/back end retail that involves. One that has a substantial online store.
In other words, a business that could start a kickstarter project without having to use kickstarter. They could easily tweak their online commerce system to run a kickstarter crowdsource, and even keep the 15% commission Amazon is going to take from their funds.
That's what kind of makes this feel a little slimy. They don't need kickstarter to do *exactly* what they're doing. But they're using KS because it's trendy, and people from what I've seen actually make worse-than-normal judgement calls when it comes to KS campaigns.
While the article is not that great, I agree that KS won't be the same after this (I doubt it's jumped the shark yet... key word, yet). PA has already said they got "special permission" from KS to do the campaign, and some of the chrome has come off of this particular crowdsource endeavor. |
