GameFront - Why I'm Not Okay with the Penny Arcade Kickstarter.
But Penny Arcade doesn't need money from Kickstarter, or to crowdsource new projects. It simply would prefer to remove ads from its site for one year, at the cost of a huge amount of money. But it’s choosing to gather that money not through usual business channels, but through Kickstarter — and in a way, it’s taking advantage of the Kickstarter culture and drawing away users who would potentially give funds to more needy projects.

I think the focus on ads is a bit silly. Yes that is the main point of their kickstarter but I'm far more interested in enabling them to make Automata and Lookout strips. It's not just the display of ads to their users, but it's the time, effort, and influence that those ads have on the business.
If you watch PATV you know that there are plenty of comic things that they'd like to do like that but they're limited by only being two guys for that aspect of their business. They mentioned that they wouldn't need to do so many sponsored works and could instead focus on their own original IP. That's what I'm interested in. |
