The Secret World Content Plans

A State of the Game Letter for The Secret World has word on the launch of Funcom's new MMORPG. This update from producer Ragnar Tørnquist also outlines plans for monthly content updates. Here's a bit on those:

We're going to be releasing fresh and tasty new content FREE to our subscribers on a regular, monthly basis. The first update is due on Tuesday, July 31st, and we will be releasing more details about that particular update later this week -- including a couple of fun surprises. (You're going to love it.)

So what will these updates contain? I'm glad you asked! I won't spoil too much, but here's an overview of some of the things we have in the pipelines:

* Mission packs on a monthly basis! The first few packs will contain new investigations for every adventure zone in the game -- but we also have more action and sabotage missions planned for the near future. These missions will feature fully voiced cut-scenes and new media pop-ups, and will match the quality of the missions currently in the game. Oh, and like everything else in our monthly updates, these packs are FREE for our subscribers!

* New weapons! We will be announcing our first auxiliary weapon soon (one clue: bigger, slower, more explosions) and new auxiliary weapons will be released on a regular basis. Combat in The Secret World will continue to evolve, and it will pay to expand your character in multiple directions!

* Raids! We're well into production on our first raid, and there will be more information about that in August! But as a teaser: The Big Apple will never be the same

Can't win with some people. People who complain about the monthly subscription fee invariable bitch that they're waiting for F2P because there's not enough content to warrant a monthly fee. Then, the first state of the game post is made, and they reference that they're going to be adding quests every month, new zones, and pretty much showing they are committed to bringing content to the game on a regular basis (which is what everyone kept saying they were waiting for), and they still get insulted.

I'm having fun with the game. Are there frustrating things about it sometimes, yes, but overall the questing is fun and there's enough missions presented in a different fashion than normal MMOs that I'm enjoying it.

Combat is similar to most MMOs, though the skill system does seem to have some depth to it with linked passive and active abilities to trigger effects, but I haven't really started to really delve too deeply into that.

I will say the two things that are bothering me:
1) There are dialog options that aren't quest related on NPCs. Some NPCs have 5 or 6 different dialog options. You have to click each of those options about 4 or 5 times to hear the whole topic. There is no way to advance the line of dialog forward, so you have to sit there waiting for the voiceover to finish. Kind of a killer when trying to listen to the backstory with a limited time to play, or if you're adventuring with someone... say your wife ... who just prefers to watch the quest dialog/cut-scenes.
2)Getting to Blue Mountain was a bit of a WTF moment. It's like someone went happy with the mob paintbrush and dropped way too many enemies in all the areas. Coupled with the mountain ridges, it's a pain in the ass to navigate, and the bug mobs (ak'ab) don't seem to leash correctly, so you'll run halfway across the zone and one will still be following you. But I'll give them one bad designed zone... seems every MMO has it, and hopefully they'll eventually fix the problem.
