I really enjoy browsing the 'whats hot' list, and then hopping over and checking out what's happening in my town. my friend's list is relatively quiet which is fine as i dont really use it to keep up with my friends anyways. I have no "friends" on it, a few regularly posting co-workers, and a ton of interesting "strangers". It's a great place to go for a lot of interesting news and links with opinions and commentary that can be filtered quickly and easily. I mostly see a lot of tech, software, programming, game industry stuff but also a ton of stuff from NASA and the U.S. government who have really embraced it. The White House and State Department update multiple times a day.
