Out of the Blue

Hey, it's Earth Hour today! Like the old joke about children's day it could be argued that every hour should be earth hour. I'm pretty sympathetic to the concept on many levels, but I think I'm with John Carmack on this one: "Iím going to turn on every damn light in protest of Earth Hour. Lighting the darkness is fundamental to humanity's climb." Maybe Earth Hour would be a good time to celebrate World Backup Day (thanks HARDOCP)?

Damn, I didn't win the Mega-millions. Oh well, would have made life too easy anyway.

yeah, i dont want to be set for life. i want to suffer. hehe. but seriously. i thought only one ticket won last night. that would make me really mad with envy.

Seriously, after the first few million, what would you spend it on?

Save it for my future generations, donate it, buy an extraordinary amount of land and have something built on it, fund whatever suits my interests and/or needs, invest (of course).

In other words, whatever the hell popped into my head. It could be worthwhile, it could be entirely self serving or fun; but it certainly wouldn't just sit there.

they were talking about lottery winners on the radio this morning. dunno if what they were saying is true but its a sad statistic. most winners dont know how to handle so much money. on average lottery winners spend all the money in 5 years regardless of the amount.

Tthe lottery is called a regressive tax for a reason. The people that need the money play it (poor in general) and the people that don't need it realise they aren't going to win and don't play.

Watching and reading about the stories, majority of people were already not very good with money, so what do you think is going to happen when you inject millions of dollars? Nothing good that is for sure. Go to the local casino - same thing.

I would have nothing but investments and trusts setup. AFter blowing a few million on just ridiculous fun, would be super easy to live off of a meager investement salary and have the money compound. After buying a few new cars and some houses for family - don't really need anything else. Can easily travel the world with 100k a year. Not even a fraction of your return each year on solid investments.

There are some success stories and I am happy for those people. It is sad to hear what hell some people bring upon themselves and their families when they get that money. My biggest thing would be making sure all future generations of my family tree could be as educated as they wanted to be.
