Op Ed

KOSU Radio - How The Smithsonian Screwed Up Its Video Game Exhibition.
To me, this videogame-oriented People’s Choice Awards is all about the madness of too many cooks, and it’s why the exhibition, while groundbreaking because it’s there at all, feels kind of horribly generic. With the exception of the inclusion of Irrational Games’ BioShock, Bethesda Softworks’ Fallout 3, Valve’s Half-Life 2 and Clover Studio’s Okami, The Art of Video Games is never boldly disruptive. It is therefore tragically disappointing – and often suspect – at its very core.

I looked at the PA report synopsis of some of the screenshots on display and was not particularly impressed. Thinking about art is always difficult, but this seemed more like a description of the technology and timeline of video game manufacture.
I think everyone can agree that there should be a conversation, but for my part I think the genre is still a little underdeveloped in the theoretical side and just displaying screenshots belies the lack of comprehension about how interactive media is different from static media.
Although blockbuster games haven't really gotten more artistic than lets say 'The Dark Knight', Indies are starting to get it (I think the obvious example is Braid) so maybe this will be an easier conversation to have in a few years.
