While neither confirming nor denying the authenticity of the recent batch of screenshots purportedly from DOOM 4, id Software's Matthew Hooper took to Twitter to say that these are not representative of the game, saying: "Those images have nothing to do with what you're gonna see in Doom4. When we officially show things you'll see awesome." Thanks VG247.

And while I would certainly agree that unique textures are preferable to tiled textures that assumes a minimum texture quality, which RAGE did not meet (your examples perfectly highlight that).
Modern games do a very good job masking the use of tiled textures and I rarely ever notice it. Yet I DID notice when RAGE used poorly textured low-polygon objects that would have looked out of place a decade ago. RAGE sold itself on its textures - virtually every interview mentioned it, telling us how it was better than the existing approach. For me - like a lot of others - they failed to deliver. |
