Guild Wars 2 PvP Details

ArenaNet Blog has an update from Mike Ferguson on World vs. World conflict in Guild Wars 2, or as George would put it: When world's collide (thanks Cutter). In this post, Mike goes into great detail on the large-scale PvP they have planned for their upcoming MMORPG sequel:

From the earliest days of development, we knew that we wanted to include some form of large-scale PvP combat in Guild Wars 2, but how would it work? We knew right away that we wanted three teams fighting against one another on a series of huge maps in the Mists (our world vs. world battleground) and that each team would be composed of an entire server full of players. Including three forces in world vs. world acts as an excellent balancing factor, preventing one team from growing too powerful and ruining the competitive balance of the game. Two teams can gang up to counter a more dominant third team, a dynamic that simply isn’t possible with only two opposing factions.

That article says 100+, but one of the lead designers said their goal is to have a maximum ceiling of 500 on each side.. and they'd like to get even higher.

Now mind that doesn't mean 500 v 500 v 500 all fighting in one big battle. Thanks to this article we now know the four zones are going to be the biggest in the game (the biggest they are able to make) with dozens of keeps, towers, resource points, etc that need to be controlled. I wouldn't doubt that we might see 100+ people on all three sides vying for the big central castle, but I'm happy to see they are implementing things that will make the classic 'DAoC giant zerg' a less effective tool than organized groups going after strategic targets.

I also like the mix of PvE and PvP. I like that even a small group can help your server (and your guild) in a big way by taking supply camps and protecting supply lines. Hell even having supply lines is a cool freaking idea.

Hopefully we'll get some vids soon on the WvW and maybe.. just maybe it'll be available to play during the March/April beta weekends.
