Australian R18+ Bill Introduced

The Sydney Morning Herald has word that, as expected, legislation is under consideration by the Australian Parliament to introduce an R18+ rating to allow the sale of games restricted to adults. They outline the situation nicely here: "Currently the highest rating is MA15+ which can mean that games for sale to adults only overseas have to be modified to meet the Australian rating requirements or not be sold at all. The new laws would bring computer games in line with the classification system for films and make Australia more consistent with international standards." On a related note, there's a short guest blog on Aussie site Player Attack written by Jason Clare, the Home Affairs Minister who wrote the legislation.

Why do we need broad generalities when it comes to limiting freedom based on age? I am not talking about lowering the age of consent or anything, least not in a way that would substantially alter the idea for more than +-20% of the time-frames involved. I am just loathing the concept of categorizing anyone below 18 as non-adult. Or anyone above 18 as one for that matter. And then theres other absurd age restrictions (in Germany, sex with 16 is legal (as long as the age (again!) is not too far apart), but watching sex movies is not until you are 18) And buying alcohol without a passport can net you a police ride home. Even if you are 17 years and 350 days old.

And when it comes to legal things the age should have absolutely NO Impact at all. (Obviously some as-of-yet-not-properly-defined-mental-maturity measurement should replace it).

In fact, i am strongly disagreeing that we *need* generalities in this case. We currently use them, yes, for the simple fact that we have not put any effort into actually producing a less "broad" generalization or measurement of mental maturity.

This does not mean we have to accept the system at hand though. Acceptance breeds complacency.
