Conversely, if you high durability weapons and armor, you can just wade into battle. As such, degradation adds long-term consequences to the choices you make in battle. That's a nice idea, but it doesn't work in practice because you get metric tons of "repair hammers", so degradation becomes utterly meaningless and nothing more than a chore.
