RAGE Reviews - PC Users Raging - ATI RAGE Drivers

Today is the North American release date for RAGE, and the game is now unlocked in some territories on Steam. Reviews are also popping up. You can read about id's new first-person shooter on AtomicGamer, AZ Central, Computer and Video Games, Destructoid, Edge Magazine, Eurogamer, gamesTM, GameTrailers,, IGN, IncGamers, Joystiq, PC Gamer, and Strategy Informer. There also seems to be quite an uproar among some PC gamers, there's a lengthy thread on reddit saying "The PC Steam version of RAGE is riddled with graphical problems and bugs!" pointing to complaint threads on the Steam forums here and here as well as on the Bethesda forums. Another large reddit thread is titled "RAGE - We need to fix this problem," and another on the topic of the game seeming like a console port, pointing to this Steam Users' Forums thread saying the game requirements have changed: "Minimum: XBOX360 or PS3 - Recommended: XBOX360 or PS3." Finally, AnandTech points the way to a new AMD Catalyst - Rage Performance Driver.

Yeah, I'm feeling a little used. With 6 years in the making, I really thought this would be a great combination of Borderlands and Fallout, both of which I love. So I preordered. I played for just 45 minutes this morning before work, and I wasn't impressed, either by the gameplay, or the visuals. I should have known. I bought the iPhone app last fall. That's what the gameplay basically is. On the performance side, I knew I was underspec'ed. I have dual 8800GT's. With the minimum being a single, I thought I'd be ok. Not great, but ok. (The recommended is only a 9800.) After all, the big deal about the engine was that it was supposed to scale. I didn't realize how it would do that. The "pop-in" is pretty drastic for me, and every time I turn, I grind down to 30 fps from the usual 50+ if I stand still. So I'm not happy about my purchase, but if Bethesda gets my money and uses it to create Fallout 4, I'd say that was a great investment. (I've played through 3 and NV about 10 times each.)

That's pretty much what I felt about it. I'm running a pretty decent system (i5-2500k, 570GTX) and it runs well, I don't get much if any pop-in, but the game ok. I guess.

The FOV isn't adjustable and it's so awkwardly small that I can barely play it for half an hour without getting sick, so I doubt I'll ever even finish it unless there's a fix somewhere down the line. I'm usually quick to defend a game if it's a console port if it's a fun game, but the limitations here just suck. The menus are clunky without a controller. The FOV is horrible and makes me sick. You can't even alt-tab, it's disabled. It's disappointing as hell.

/edit: Alt-tab works this morning now, oddly...but the texture pop-in is horrible now. Sigh...

FOV is adjustable.
