Worth is a hard thing to judge, since some games will certainly sell for $40. It's likely to be the same issue as $49 games shifting to $59 this last generation; the quote from Epic today that talks about the disappearing middle-class of gaming hits the nail on the head, and the pricing of games isn't helping that at all...if it's not the root cause of it.
Handheld games had been $30ish until recently, a price where most can afford to gamble on some of the games you pick up. The higher the price goes, the less likely that people are going to make that gamble on non-AAA games or games with middling review scores.
It's probably too late for the 3DS to go this route, but if the Vita opens up to having an indie-dev relationship, like what's being seen on XBL or Steam or even the Apple store right now, in addition to their core full-priced games, you could easily see something that does as well as any of the phones out there. |
