Epic on Bulletstorm Sales

Kotaku has some perspective on sales of Bulletstorm from Epic president Mike Capps, after hearing from EA that People Can Fly's recent first-person shooter "under-performed," and learning from a financial analyst that the game barely sold 300,000 units in its first month of availability. Capps confirms that the game didn't make them any money, but still thinks it was a worthy project as he looks ahead to PCF's next project. They paraphrase him saying: "Capps says they could have taken the easy route all along, not done Bulletstorm and gotten People Can Fly, the Epic-owned Polish development studio on that game to just chrun [sic] out Gears of War content. That's not what he wants those folks doing. That's not what he wants Epic doing." They also offer a direct quote. "The studio has shipped AAA content," he said. "The next thing we do with People Can Fly will be great."

Are you suggesting that old games didn't feature jumping as a standard ability?

Really reaching for something there aren't you? I didn't say that, nor did I even come fucking close to suggesting that.

There are plenty of great games old and new without jumping. Bulletstorm is not one of them.

Excluding Bulletstorm, name me one big name FPS shooter released in the last 10 years that does not have a jump ability.

Mass Effect, Resident Evil, Mafia 2, Gears of War, Dragon Age, Dead Space, Hitman, Batman: Arkham Asylum, etc

And not a single one of those is a first person shooter.

Mafia 2, made little to no sense for not having a jump ability. Mass Effect and Dragon Age are RPG's first and RPG's tend to not have jumping. Resident Evil, the gameplay is built around restricted movement. Specifically talking ResEvil 5...would have been a better game had it been designed around more freedom of movement. Gears of War, could care less, it's a crap console shooter from douchey CliffyB. Dead Space, pretty sure he wears magnetic boots...good luck jumping in those. Wasnt a big fan of the game, wasnt due to the non-jumping. Hitman, not an action game, and jumping would have been nice. Batman... Im pretty sure being able to dodge, glide with the cape, grapple hook, etc ...kinda makes up for not being able to jump. There were no freedom of movement issues with Batman.

I'm not entirely sure what you are arguing, other than trying to vehemently defend a single design decision in Bulletstorm, which is exactly why I wasn't interested in getting into a point by point debate with you because you pick, pick, pick and its fucking annoying.

To FPS and action games in general, jumping as a design feature promotes exploration and creativity in the end user. Waiting for a button indicator to climb on things is a huge step back in game design and is just plain lazy. If this had been any other game except for your ass monkey CliffyB's, you'd be saying the same thing.
