Over a Million Man-Hours of DNF Development

A post on the PlayStation Blog by Gearbox Software president Randy Pitchford reveals that over 6,000 man-months have been invested in development of Duke Nukem Forever, the once-cancelled and now fairly imminent first-person shooter. Word is: "I have estimated that 3D Realms invested between 3,500 and 4,500 man-months of effort into the game, a lot of which has been lost to the ages. Meanwhile, by the time Gearbox ships the game we’ll have put in another 2,500 man months of effort. I’ve never been involved with a project of this magnitude. By comparison, Borderlands, which is by no means a small game and involved the invention of an entirely new universe and new technologies to support crazy features like millions of guns, involved between 3,500 and 4,000 man-months of effort." Oddly, this means that Gearbox has invested well over half the time in developing the game as 3D Realms did, even though 3D Realms worked on the game around six times longer than they did. Shacknews did the math on this, saving wear-and-tear on our calculators. A man month represents about 175 man-hours, meaning DNF development has consumed over one million man-hours.

I thought borderlands was great..

I thought Borderlands was ok too but Randy did a few interviews before release where he literally lied through his teeth about the PC version. I don't mean your typical game PR exaggeration stuff, outright lies about the PC client, testing and multiplayer. It was a really frustrating experience because I might not have even purchased the game had I known the state it would be in at release.
and since then you no longer buy games on day 1. Am I right?
