You can't block, avoid or interrupt their backstabs and you can't stop them from cloaking either. There's no way to detect a cloaked assassin either. To make matters even worse, they drink health potions whenever their health gets low and then cloak so you can't do any more damage to them until they uncloak and kill one of your companions with a backstab. The only reliable way to kill them is to continually stun/freeze/paralyze/immobilize them so they never have an opportunity to do anything.
If you thought enemy mages were bad in DAO, the enemy assassins in DA2 (nightmare difficulty) are about 100 times worse.
They're pretty bad even on hard. Mages are the death of me on hard, not to mention the sudden reinforcements every fight. I can't tell you how many times I had a perfect plan, was about to win, then 10 more enemies spawn out of thin air (literally you can see them pop up in front of you out of nothing) and kill me, since I was spread out and they might spawn next to my mage or something.
It's just badly designed in a lot of ways for hard mode. Then you put it on normal for a while and you can win every fight without even paying attention. There needs to be a middle-ground.
