On Mojang's Future

A Day In The Life Of Minecraft Creator Mojang on Rock, Paper, Shotgun spends some time with the Swedish development studio formed by Minecraft designer Markus ‘Notch’ Persson, discussing the success of Minecraft and becoming familiar with the culture of the company and its native country. They highlight what Notch told them about plans for his next project, as the recently announced Scrolls is "being developed by others at Mojang." Saying he has "many games in mind," though he "keeps going back and forth" on which one he wants to do next, Notch discusses the possibility of a space trading simulator ("but that’s going to be lots of work, and be extremely nerdy, and probably won’t sell very well"), a "weird town simulation thing" which would be his "take on what real life is," and a project he was hesitant to mention for fear the idea would be stolen, which would be "like a football manager, but it’s for fantasy heroes. If you have a troll and a goblin in the same team, the troll might eat the goblin. Stuff like that." Thanks Quentin.

Minecraft is a great game, a steal at its current price (and definitely so at the alpha price I paid for it), but I must admit to not being a big Notch fan. He's buggered up a lot of patches, is rarely discussing Minecraft on twitter, and has taken an almost obscene amount of time off lately. I don't know why he thought it would be a good idea for everyone in the company to go to the GDC, because of course, it left nobody behind to keep the server up and running. Some of those guys have only been working for him for a couple of months too. Talk about a cushy number.

Great game, for sure, but in all honesty I think he got lucky more so than anything else. I'd be very surprised if anything else noteworthy actually came out of Mojang.
