Cave levels are a great fit for our new lighting system. Light beams coming in from cracks in the ceilings scatter light around the level for a more clean and realistic lighting overall, compared to our old lighting engine. I often wonder if any games designers have ever actually been in a cave. The first bend away from the entrance and it's black like nothing you've ever seen on the surface. If "realistic lighting" was any kind of concern they'd give the characters torches, or at least floaty magic lights. Would look a lot better with creating inpenetrable shadows along the cave walls as well. Incidentally, whatever happened to characters having to light their own way in dark caves and dungeons?
I always thought it added a nice touch to have to either have some kind of special vision or at least a magical or mundane light source. With each option having benefits and drawbacks. |
