The Gearbox Software Forums announce Steamworks support for Duke Nukem Forever, their upcoming shooter sequel starring gaming's fair-haired boy. Here's word on what this means to you: "It means that regardless of where or how you buy Duke Nukem Forever on PC, your purchase will be tied to your Steam account, ensuring that you'll always be able to install a copy of the game even if you lose your disc."

I like Steam, but I hate Steamworks. I don't understand people here. A few weeks ago people were bitching about a game announcing it will use GFWL, but now they're having orgasms over a game announcing it will use Steamworks. GFWL is a piece of shit too, but it's not DRM and you aren't forced to use it. If you create an offline account, you'll hardly know GFWL is there.
Steamworks means you have to register the game with Steam and connect to Steam to play it. Sure Steam has an offline mode, but it will not stay offline forever. I have it set offline on my notebook with a few games installed, and every now and then it forces me to connect and validate that I own the shit. The first time it did this I was out of town without an internet connection. I'm fine with this if I buy a game from Steam, but it's not OK if I buy a retail game and have to do this.
Compare Fallout 3 with Fallout New Vegas. Fallout 3 has GFWL, New Vegas has Steamworks:
When I got Fallout 3, I installed it from the disk, ran the launcher to set it up, set GFWL offline and put the disk back in the box. When I want to play it, I just click on its icon. It only requires the disk when you run the launcher, but not the game.
When I got New Vegas, I installed it from the disk, registered it with Steam, then had to wait while it validated and downloaded more shit. Now when I want to play, I first have to wait for Steam to load and connect (~30 seconds) before I can play my game.
I can start Fallout 3 and load my last save game faster than it takes Steam to load. |
