Champions Online: Free For All is now live, offering the chance to practice your heroism in Cryptic's superhero MMORPG without having to find a place to hide your wallet in your tights. These Release Notes outline what's changed in the game, explaining the difference between silver and gold, and explaining their newly introduced archetypes system. The notes also include an address from Executive Producer Shannon Posniewski, who is also the subject of a Champions Online: Free for All Launch Day Q&A on Ten Ton Hammer.

I downloaded this last night and setup a new character. My old characters I'd created in the past where still there, one might have been one that you build from scratch which is supposed to be a feature you don't get with F2P.
When you create a character now you get to choose the basic classes, so there is a guy who shoots fire, ice, one that does mind control, one that does something that is like psychic energy, etc. Once you pick that class your powers and such are set to the default and you move to the next screen and into the game. I'm surprised they didn't change that starting area to be honest, I always felt the game started out terribly with that little startup training area. Just drops you right into a battle ground and gives you these really lame missions. Go kill 5 balloons over there, go talk to that guy. It technically works but it just seems like a bad way to introduce someone to the game. I'd rather they start you at some sort of super hero academy. It should be a bit quieter and you can feel like you're being trained rather than being dropped into combat.
Will be interesting to see how it goes, I didn't have time to do more than start a character.
Rift did this too, I fired that up and right out of the gate it's enemies all over. Kill this guy, kill that guy, scenery is impressive on that game, and this huge walking giant looking thing comes walking through the starting area, I just stood there in awe, that was awesome. I didn't go near that guy as I'm pretty sure he's flatten me. |
