I agree that facebook has its issues, but I find it a very useful tool for promoting and managing my band, as well as a good way to stay in at least some kind of meaningful contact with people who are dear to me but happen to live in other countries and cities.

I prefer Skype for that stuff, it has pretty much everything you need + great video chat. I think people just prefer the narcissistic Facebook elements like the who likes who crap. I'm sure Facebook is great for commercial opportunities but I find the type of social interaction on it to be mostly superficial. Just my opinion anyway. If you find it useful then hey whatever works for you.
