On Portal 2's Dropped Competitive Multiplayer

There's a video interview on 1UP talking with Erik Wolpaw and Chet Faliszek at Valve's offices to learn more about Portal 2, the upcoming platformer sequel. There's behind-the-scenes footage at Valve's cool digs and word on a competitive multiplayer mode that was dropped: "Along with co-op, [we had] the idea of sort of a competitive Portal multiplayer," says Wolpaw. "We went down that path, actually, for a little while and had something up and running -- the best way to describe it is sort of speedball meets Portal. You know, a sports analog. And it quickly became apparent that while it's fun for about two seconds to drop portals under people and things like that, it quickly just devolves into pure chaos. It lost a lot of the stuff that was really entertaining about Portal, which was puzzle-solving. Cooperative puzzle-solving was just a much more rewarding path."

I honestly don't give a shit about the competitive community! Team Fortress 2 is fucking fun, imagine that.

But then, those CS numbers basically prove you're spouting bullshit.

Thank god Valve develops their multiplayer games, and not you.

In 2006 CS had almost 60,000 SERVERS and 3,000,000 UNIQUE PLAYERS per month. 129,000 is a pittance.

Valve single-handedly killed CAL and CPL by watering down their games, and with the leagues, went the players. So Valve isn't as smart as you think.

PS TF2 is so unfun I uninstalled after 3 days and took the orange box right back to Best Buy.

Umm...hes saying there are curently, as in right now at this very moment, 129,000 people playing those games. Not a monthly average. Now I don't if my math is any good but 129,000X30 days in a typical month equals 3,870,000 per month. So suck on that! And you should site the source of your numbers instead of "i pulled them out my a$$"
