Happy Cinco de Mayo! I was reading in the Wikipedia about this commemoration of the Mexican victory over the French in the Battle of Puebla in 1862, and was interested to see that this occasion is more significant here in the U.S. than in Mexico. They quote a 2007 UCLA research paper saying: "The holiday, which has been celebrated in California continuously since 1863, is virtually ignored in Mexico."
