EA on C&C4's "No" DRM

A post called C&C 4 Installation-Online Update on the Command & Conquer Forums by community manager APOC addresses questions about installing Command & Conquer 4: Tiberian Twilight, the recently released real-time strategy sequel. According to APOC, "Command & Conquer 4 has NO DRM. Zip, zero, zilch, none." He then goes on to explain that the game does require a serial key and an EA.com account to install, and while you can install the game on as many machines as you want and can play without the disk in the drive, you must be logged in to play, similar to the system Ubisoft recently implemented, though Ubisoft freely admits that this is DRM.

Even a cdkey is a form of DRM. DRM doesn't just mean "software that fucks up your computer". It's a pretty encompassing term that represents many forms of protection for software and intellectual property. So yes, account structured authentication counts as well in my opinion.

Not so. Serials and CD keys do not prevent you from installing the application or game on multiple computers. As long as you have a serial or CD key, you can install it on pretty much any number of computers.

DRM is a generic term for access control technologies that can be used by hardware manufacturers, publishers, copyright holders and individuals to impose limitations on the usage of digital content and devices. The term is used to describe any technology that inhibits uses of digital content not desired or intended by the content provider. DRM wasn't even conceived until well after serials and CD keys were in use.

EDIT - I do agree that account structured authentication counts as DRM though, and EA is just trying to make it seem like there is no DRM so they can use that as a selling point. Shame on them!
