Chris Taylor Interview

There's a short Q&A with Chris Taylor on Fragland.net where they talk with the supreme commander at Gas Powered Games, asking seven questions about Supreme Commander 2, the upcoming RTS sequel. When asked if the game will suffer from compromises to accommodate consoles, Chris' answer suggests he thought he was being asked the opposite, as he explains how the console versions will not suffer due to compromises for the PC edition: "That was something we were very wary of from the start, and worked very hard not to let that happen. Consider this, a huge percentage of the UI was custom made for the 360, the engine was optimized for the multi-core architecture and we came up with quite a few console specific control scheme enhancements. We developed the idea of Strategic Mode and the Stretch Cursor all because of the need for better control on the console. And you won’t believe how intuitive and natural it is to use Paint Attack, the complimentary attack selection to Paint Select."

I am more worried about the consolization of this game than any other game in years. Everything I've read has made me cringe. Admittedly, I am one of the relatively few who reveled in SC1's complexity. Building too much at once without enough mass extractors? POP! goes your economy. Enjoy your trip to the defeat screen! To me that was a wonderful mechanic that really forced you to make difficult choices in how you went about building your war machine. That Taylor has proudly proclaimed this has all been yanked out in favor of a simplistic model makes me want to forget this game is even coming. I am dreading that Bioshock will look like System Shock's twin brother in comparison to how Supreme Commander 2 will resemble Supreme Commander 1.

Still, it might be a bit premature for the chicken little routine, as no one has really gotten to see how this will all work in action. Hopefully there will be a demo. No one will be happier than me to find out I've been dead wrong on this.
