Blizzard: ‘Who Knows’ When Diablo III Will Ship? on Techland has a bit from Rob Pardo on recent indications that Diablo III is a ways off. "We always announce all of our games too early," says the Blizzard executive video president, who admits this clarity has not helped them remedy the situation: "We realize that and go, ‘You know what? Next time we’re not going to do that.’ And then we always fail at that. But I’d rather fail at that than fail at making the game great. I think it’s safe to say that, yeah, (Diablo III) is not going to be out next year."

Ahh, the old internet argument standby: "If you can't do it better, you can't criticize!" It's still just as stupid an argument now as it was 150 years ago (give or take a few years) since the dawn of the net. It's not "If you can't do it better, you can't criticize!". Rather, it's "if you don't know wtf you're talking about, then keep your mouth shut".
I'm sure that your industrial job managing PLC projects gives you perfect insight into handling creative talent working in the fickle entertainment industry. Forgive the hyperbole, but why don't you start bitching about how Da Vinci took forever to paint the Mona Lisa or that Fitzgerald didn't have a set schedule when he wrote Gastby?
Given that Blizzard is the last great PC developer left standing, and given that you know nothing about video game development, who are you to tell Blizzard to change their corporate culture to suit your impatient and childish gaming schedule? Ignorance breeds confidence I guess. I'm sure your management style would fit well producing endless sequels for EA and the rest of Activision, but I doubt you'd produce anything I'd want to play.
Also, Blizzard has proven that they have good project management when they need it, considering they have met the deadlines of their WOW expansions without a hitch. Blizzard does what works for Blizzard, and if that allows them to be the only major developer left that's dedicated to the PC, then I'd gladly wait. This comment was edited on Nov 24, 2009, 19:28. |
