No MW2 Dedicated Server

There will be no dedicated server for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, reports a new BASH webcast on BASHandSlash.com, where they converse with Infinity Ward community manager Rob Bowling about their concerns that PC platform is being marginalized for MW2 (thanks Steve). They learn the PC edition is still not delayed, and will include Steam support, but their concerns are only heightened by learning that there are no plans for a dedicated server for the game, as matchmaking on the PC will entirely go through IW.net. Robert did not have answers to questions about how this will impact custom map-making and modification efforts. The Infinity Ward Forums have a petition asking for dedicated server support and there's another Dedicated Servers for CoD-MW2 Petition on petitionsonline.com that currently boasts over 15,000 signatures.

This is the summary from the webcast btw, I had to scroll down half the page to find it on the other site:

• IW has control of the game
• IWnet servers will host multiplayer
• DLC will be a charged item for PC
• No dedicated servers
• Matchmaking system used to play with similarly ranked players
• VAC instead of PB
• Semi-capable password servers
• Semi-capable ad-hoc servers
• Competitive play is dead (opinion piece from csnation)
• MW2 mods would not be possible (not directly stated/confirmed)
• Full integration into Steam

I don't see how MW2 mods will be possible so for me that's a confirmation.

Matchmaking simply isn't popular on the PC. Right now there are over 400 people playing Solder of Fortune 2 which uses dedicated servers. That game is what, 8 years old and mediocre to boot? Conversely I couldn't find a single game when trying to play Red Faction Guerilla which uses matchmaking, that game came out a month ago. RFG on Xbox Live is very popular, on the PC dead. Matchmaking and the PC aren't a good fit unless it's optional.

People say consoles are killing PC gaming but really it's just stupid decisions like this one that are killing PC gaming. Call of Duty has always had dedicated servers and they've always been immensely popular. Filtering out empty servers I still get massive server lists full of players to choose from. I'm sure people are going to buy this no matter what and so IW will look at it as a success regardless which is the shitty thing.
