RAGE Engine Details

This document (Adobe Acrobat format) has technical details on id Software's new Tech 5 engine from a presentation by id programmer J.M.P. van Waveren at SIGGRAPH 2009. That being over our heads, we'll content ourselves looking at the visuals in some new RAGE screenshots on Shacknews.

I'm pretty sure Doom 3 was per-polygon hit detection, not per pixel. I think it went to per pixel in later engine revisions.

Listen, everyone will have bad days. id gave us some of the best engines of all time. id tech 4 isn't among them. It wasn't a very good engine, and there's really no getting around that. It had some advances, but it prioritized very poorly and pushed advantages well beyond the hardware of the time and ignored simple ones it should have concentrated on.
Will this engine be a return to form? We'll see. I hear they're spending more time thinking about tools these days, which will help them with licensing, but they may be too far behind to ever catch up to their competitors there. Technology-wise I can see them releasing another excellent engine. Licensing-wise I think they're out of that game. I'm not even convinced that matters to them.
